ATT32257 Albatros DV/Va Jasta 11 red paint on linen
This set portrays the effect of red overpainting of the two-tone painted camouflage and white painted rudder, the original 'Eisernes Kreuz' national markings just showing through.
Match red for fuselage and metal parts as close as possible to the decals - a perfect match is not necessary as enamel paint and tinted dope would exhibit different characteristics.
ATT32267 Albatros DV/Va 'Berthold blue' paint on upper linen flying surfaces & pale blue paint on linen undersurfaces
This set represents my take on the blue used as an identifying colour on the aircraft of Berthold's various units. Some aircraft retained their original painted camouflage or printed linen 'lozenge' on some surfaces - check your references.
Match blue for fuselage and metal parts as close as possible to the decals - a perfect match is not necessary as enamel paint and tinted dope would exhibit different characteristics.
NEW! Painted camouflage effect and Jasta colours for flying surfaces!
The landscape of Northern Europe, when not desecrated by war, viewed with an artist's eye reveals subtle shades of yes, green and brown but also a much richer palette, particularly in the shadows. Look again next time you are near tree-lined fields, woodland, mixed farmland..
Capture reports give us some clues as to approximate colour matches and subsequent studies of fabric samples often published in our references can give "best guess" matches (not all historians over the years have had a full understanding of aged varnishes and the ravages of time and UV light exposure) but without the original recipes and directives to learn from Dave Douglass and I have put together these two colour-ways as a scale effect match for the likely look of the originals on a model.
Whilst certainly some production batches of aircraft may have had similar demarcation lines of the colours, it is very rare to see pictures that indicate application instructions were rigidly adhered to on more than one airframe.
The choices offered by Aviattic (in two different greens, and two slightly different purples) reflect only a fraction of the variety of patterns and were based on schemes that do, at least, have some photographic back-up - even if only revealing some elements of the pattern.
Many of these well-known photos are to be found in Wingnut Wings instruction manuals and some are borne out by Ronny Bar's lovely but artistically muted colour profiles.
Some of these are further supported by photos reproduced in dozens of publications through the years.
Profile artists seem to contradict each other and even their own work when interpreting which of the "grey tones" should represent which colour, given the idiosyncrasies of the film types used during this period...a topic that deserves full, forensic investigation (Bruno Schmaling touched the surface in his recent Aeronaut Publications book) but, for now, our choices are based on what we liked the look of. The darker colour representing green.
Hopefully you will find something that matches or comes close to your chosen scheme.
If no evidence exists, then choose your favourite!..
