Decal sets and special strutter 'Bundle' offers available now!
The Roden kit is in my opinion a very nice and well-priced product. It has its faults like almost any kit, but the real turn-off for me was the rather poor and unimaginative decal options that were included within the kit. You can’t blame Roden. The fact that they can produce anything given what their country of origin is facing is frankly astounding.
Having bought my kit, I started thinking about how I could do something for myself that was a little more exciting decal-wise than what was in the kit. It didn’t take long to realise that going down the Aviattic cookie route would be the most practical method of producing such decals and so after having a few words with my friend Richard Andrews what was initially intended as a one-off project for myself suddenly became a lot bigger. There will be eight sets in total, each set containing three A4 sheets of decals designed to cover almost all of the aircraft There are three RNAS sheets, three RFC sheets and two Belgium Air service sheets.
The sheets include interior parts. I’ve even created some masks that will allow modellers to spray the interior framework. The sets also include a full set of authentic instrument decals sized to the Roden instrument board.
In all cases the decals are based on original photographs wherever possible and as such are as accurate as I can possibly make them. There are some areas where I have had to make some assumptions, or followed somebody else’s assumption but have tried to keep these cases down to a minimum. Where there are uncertainties, I have made every effort to include alternatives.
A1083 - Cross and Cockade vol 31, no.4
9407 - Cross and Cockade vol 45 no.4 / Vol 43 no.2 (Arvo side profile)
9722 in flight - Naval Aces of WW1 part 1 (Osprey aircraft of the aces no.97)
The photo I line up photo for 9722 and 9739 was on the web only. There are profiles of both of these in the same C and C as 9407

ATT32367 Sopwith 1 & 1/2 Strutter 9407 Collishaw/Draper No.3 Wing RNAS
Dave Hooper explains :
9407 is the aircraft that Collishaw flew over to France in. It was used on operations by a number of pilots including Collishaw. As a very early production Sopwith built Strutter it left the factory with a clear doped fuselage finish but was partially repainted in PC10. I am aware of only one photograph of the aircraft in this early paint scheme. Squadron accounts of this aircraft record that it was marked with a number 16 which isn’t visible on the photograph leading me to follow some others in the supposition that the 16 was fairly small and in a position that would have been hidden by the drooped elevator in the photograph. I believe the coaming is more likely to be overpainted in PC10, but I have seem artists interpretations with a wooden coaming.

ATT32368 Sopwith 1 & 1/2 Strutter 9722 Draper/Barker No.3 Wing RNAS
Dave Hooper explains :
9722 is a bit more speculative and based on the same line-up photograph as 9739. There is a second photograph of 9722 in flight but this does not show some of the details visible on the line-up photo.
The line-up photo clearly shows three white vertical lines towards the rear of the aircraft, the most forward of which takes on the appearance of a cross which I believe is actually ‘Lift Here” wording. I couldn’t work out the purpose of the other two white lines until I noticed that the colour shade between these lines was different to the PC10. Hence 9722 has been given a blue strip with white outlines at the rear of the aircraft. Considering that this action might be considered a step to far for some I have also include replacement PC10 with white lines for this area. If you buy in to the blue strip theory, then there is the possibility that the strip extended to the underside, and so I have included an optional alternative underside top depict this. Interesting enough the in-flight photograph shows no evidence of white stripes suggesting another variation of the scheme either before or after the scheme that I have tried to interpret.

ATT32369 Sopwith 1 & 1/2 Strutter 9739 Dalison/Fraser No.3 Wing RNAS
Dave Hooper explains :
9739 is a very well-known strutter. Again I only know of one photograph where 9739 is part of a line-up of single and two seat strutters. Some artists have got confused between 9739 and a single seat strutter using the same markings. The single seat had Red/white wheel covers, however 9739 did not. I personally believe that 9739 was factory finished in PC10 and so would expect it to have a wooden finished coaming.

ATT32370 Sopwith 1 & 1/2 Strutter N5236 (S8) Declercq/Meunier Belgian Air Service
Dave Hooper explains:
N5236 had an exploding grenade painted on its fuselage and is less-well known.
It is thought that the motif was chosen because its crew were both originally Grenadiers.
This aircraft is depicted in the Aeronaut Belgium Air Service book as having had a red cowling and I’m certainly not going to make any arguments to the contrary. On both Belgian aircraft I have included an optional horizontal stabilizer part with the “S” number on the port upper surface. This is not visible in any of the photos of N5241 or N5236 but it is present on other Belgian Strutters from the same period.

ATT32371 Sopwith 1 & 1/2 Strutter N5241(S7) Sterpin/d'Ursel Belgian Air Service
Dave Hooper explains :
N5241 ‘Flying Fox’ is reasonably well known, possibly because of its inclusion on a Blue Rider sheet. There are two very clear photos of this aircraft and a lovely colour profile in the Aeronaut book.
On both Belgian aircraft I have included an optional horizontal stabilizer part with the “S” number on the port upper surface. This is not visible in any of the photos of N5241 or N5236 but it is present on other Belgian Strutters from the same period.

ATT32372 Sopwith 1 & 1/2 Strutter A1083 No.45 Squadron RFC
Dave Hooper explains :
A1083 of 45 squadron is based on a single fairly grainy line-up photo and fairly unusual in that the fuselage is clear doped linen covered. It is not known who flew this aircraft. Like all the RFC aircraft it does not have any windows in the centre section of the upper wing. On the photograph there is also evidence that it had had some of the control surfaces replaced. The upper wing roundels have white lines around them, but the matching elevators do not appear to be outlined. The elevator appears to be in clear doped linen, but the horizontal stabilizer appears to be PC10. Wheel covers are speculative, based on other 45 squadron strutter wheel covers from the same period. I have included an optional black fuselage strip for those who want to follow Ronny Barrs interpretation of the aircraft. Personally, I think a red stripe was more likely.

ATT32373 Sopwith 1 & 1/2 Strutter A8286 Trainer RFC
Dave Hooper explains :
A8286 was an operational aircraft which at the time it was photographed in a chequerboard scheme was probably being used as a trainer. Unlike some trainers, A8286 appears to have retained the scarff ring and Lewis gun.
Cowling appears aluminium finish, side cowlings losing their PC10 enamel paint or, simply, dirty!..

ATT32374 Sopwith 1 & 1/2 Strutter A993 Reece/Moult No.43 Squadron RFC
Dave Hooper explains :
A993 was a much-photographed aircraft allowing me to produce the size, spacing and styling of the port and starboard lettering as close as possible to the original photograph. There was a distinct difference between the lettering on the two sides. There is also some unique stencilling on the rudder which I have been able to include.
