Dave Hooper explains:
N5236 had an exploding grenade painted on its fuselage and is less-well known.
It is thought that the motif was chosen because its crew were both originally Grenadiers.
This aircraft is depicted in the Aeronaut Belgium Air Service book as having had a red cowling and I’m certainly not going to make any arguments to the contrary. On both Belgian aircraft I have included an optional horizontal stabilizer part with the “S” number on the port upper surface. This is not visible in any of the photos of N5241 or N5236 but it is present on other Belgian Strutters from the same period.
Red painted cowls.
